[Editor's Note: Some people have mistaken the following article to mean that we are shutting this site and the zine down. THIS IS NOT TRUE. We are simply restructuring the site and the zine. We plan to be here for a long time.]
With the Winter issue of HEROIN Helper (the zine) delayed due to a number of problems, I've had time to contemplate death--in this particular case, the death of HEROIN Helper.
When I first started this site, I had the vague but certain idea that it would become something bigger than me. I guess I had some image of junkies banding together with HEROIN Helper as their rallying call. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I'm sure it was in my mind.
What HEROIN Helper is and probably always will be (as long as it will be) is an information source for people interested in heroin. Based upon the e-mail that HEROIN Helper gets, it seems we have two kinds of readers.
- Users looking for answers to questions about practical problems they face.
- Non-users looking for help dealing with their using friends and family. Surprisingly, most of these users are not addicts.
Based upon this knowledge and the knowledge of the certainty of HEROIN Helper's death, I have decided to change the zine and the layout of the site. Overall, my aim will be at simplifying both--making it easier for users and friends to find the information they need. Look for these changes by the end of the year. As for the next issue of the zine, it should be out at about the same time.
When HEROIN Helper is no more, at least there will be an information archive. By better organizing the information, I will be making the archive more useful. In this way, HEROIN Helper may live on past its own death.
